It's true. I'm in the Globe, but not for my art.
So, switching gears for a moment: I heard that two 15-year-old girls at a Malden charter school have been hit with multiple detentions and are facing suspension. The reason? They wore braids.
The two girls in the middle are Mya and Deanna Cook, respectively. They are standing with their parents, Aaron and Colleen. (Photo courtesy of the Cook family, in The Washington Post)
I wore box braids (and once, a weave) in high school. To be perfectly honest, my braids weren't nearly as nice as theirs. But I promise you that wearing hair extensions never got in the way of my goals, nor should they have. I was livid that the Cook girls were being pilloried for their hair. I wrote a letter to their school. I then posted the letter on my wall, with my high-school photo (which I'll spare you here). At the suggestion of friends, I then submitted a modified version to the Boston Globe's Letters section, and it was accepted. The online version is below; the print version will be available tomorrow. (I didn't choose the heading, btw.)

This is of a work in progress--my largest canvas to date. I may also post some other photos, but I think this video captures my excitement. Enjoy!

To celebrate my latest installation at Lickety Split, I will be hosting a reception there on Saturday, February 22, from 2pm to 5pm. Complimentary fare will be provided, and Lickety Split will be offering wine specials.
Also, I'm excited that Rob Flax will be playing live! It's a pretty sweet setup so that the music can also be heard outside on the street. You can check out Rob's website here: www.robflax.com.
So, to recap:
LOCATION: Lickety Split, 401 South St., Philadelphia PA 19147

Alas, all good things must come to an end. My 3-month installation at Good Karma is drawing to a close. (Time flies, yes?) That's the bad news.
The good news is that I put up a new piece this morning. Or rather, it's a revisit/reproduction of an older piece I presented as a wedding gift to friends. This version is bigger and well, blingier. Gold leaf and acrylic on canvas. It is available for sale. I'm sorry the photos don't do it justice, so go check it out!
Good Karma Cafe (Fitler outpost), 331 S. 22nd St. 7am-10pm, seven days a week.
